Founded in 2018, Stick&Bow is a Montreal-based duo composed of Krystina Marcoux on marimba and Argentine-born Juan Sebastian Delgado on cello. Although they are classically trained, their repertoire is eclectic, ranging from baroque music to tango. For this album, entitled Veni, vola, veni and dedicated to Astor Piazzola, they joined forces with the famous Argentinean pianist Gustavo Beytelmann, who also wrote the arrangements.

Veni, vola, veni is Stick&Bow’s third album. After having recorded works by Bach in collaboration with harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour, they now tackle tango with the master Gustavo Beytelmann. Working with Beytelmann was an immense privilege for both musicians, who readily admit that this experience will be a milestone in their career and that it changed their vision of tango, while deepening their knowledge of this style of music. The result is there and no one doubts that the realization of Veni, vola, veni gives them wings for the future…

Argentinean pianist, refugee in Paris in 1976, Gustavo Beytelmann accompanied Astor Piazzola during his European tour in 1977. With Patrice Carratini and Juan José Mosalini, he founded a trio that gave numerous concerts in Europe over the next 12 years and recorded three albums. In addition to his activities as a pianist, Beytelmann is also a renowned composer, defining himself as a “composer who plays the piano”. Since 1996 he has been the artistic director of the Tango Department at the Rotterdam Conservatory. He also gives master classes at the Academy of Music in Monaco.

In 2018, Krystina Marcoux and Juan Sebastian Delgado found Stick&Bow were among the “young emerging artists” of Jeunesses Musicales Canada for the 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 season. They have performed at festivals including Festival Classica, Le Festival Musique du Bout du Monde, and the Montreal Bach Festival, and are currently touring with Jeunesses Musicales France.

With a PhD in cello from McGill University, Juan Sebastian Delgado practices contemporary music and nuevo tango. He also studied at the Boston Conservatory, where he conducted several research and creation projects. As a member of the Orchestra of the America, an ensemble that brings together young talents from 25 different countries in the Americas, he has been called upon to teach young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in various places, including Belize, Colombia and Armenia.

A graduate of the Gatineau Conservatory, first prize winner of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (MSO) competition in 2012, and holder of a doctorate from the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Lyon, Krystina Marcoux participated in Pierre Lapointe’s European tours in 2018 and 2019. With a particular interest in interdisciplinary practices, she blends theater, dance, mime or humor with her percussion. She made her debut as a soloist at the OSM in 2019, under the direction of Kent Nagano.
