… an excellent showcase for Stanley Cowell as composer as well as pianist. …a style rooted in McCoy Tyner’s muscularity with a more measured classical grace added…full of technical virtuosity …
The later dates [Games and Bright Passion] are hampered by an inexperienced and below-par rhythm section, and one has to ask what the motivation was. Cowell transcends it triumphantly on Games, playing with huge authority and often without seeming reference to his colleagues. There are some majestic episodes on "From The Rivers Of Our Father," but they fail to add up to anything larger. "Sienna: Welcome To The New World" is perfunctory and bland, and the new material fails to get things moving.
