These early Latin songs from the repertoire of some unknown 10th or 11th century Rhineland harper are drawn mainly from the Carmina Cantabrigiensis, the so-called ‘Cambridge Songs’. Varied and lively, they are a welcome addition to the discography of early music, and Sequentia are to be thanked for planning and executing such a challenging project. Behind the recording lies much searching: firstly the bringing to light of the texts themselves and their provenance, then a scholarly reconstruction of the music, and finally the technique and imagination of how to perform it.

The recital demonstrates the historical role of the harpist, not forgetting Orpheus or David; there are songs inspired by the dawn, Philomena naturally, and the Swan song, with ingenious improvisation on a miniature flute, a copy of an 11th-century instrument made from a swan’s tibia; and finally, songs of desire and seduction. Simple harmony is provided by successions of either parallel fourths or fifths, or by the occasional drone or basso ostinato. Flute, harp and lyre contribute their individual colours. The originality of the text of Caute cane, cantor care, every word beginning with the letter ‘c’, intrigues the listener. Elsewhere, you may occasionally recognise some familiar strain of melody, such as the contrafactum O admirabile veneris (‘O Roma nobilis’). Reconstruction of music composed before the birth of notation is always a hazardous task, but however true or not it may be to authenticity, this recital is a true delight. ~grammophone
