The Scottish Opera's live concert performance of Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore was given at the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival, and the one-night-only show was well received by both the audience and critics. Featuring a charismatic cast including John Mark Ainsley as Sir Joseph Porter, Elizabeth Watts as Josephine, Andrew Foster-Williams as Captain Corcoran, Toby Spence as Ralph Rackstraw, Hilary Summers as Buttercup, and comedian Tim Brooke-Taylor as the Narrator, the production was especially noteworthy for conductor Richard Egarr's historically informed approach to the music.

This is the first recording of a period performance of HMS Pinafore, and the attention paid to 19th century practices in operetta and authentic instrumentation add to the performance's value to historians and collectors. However, most listeners will appreciate the humor and highly infectious tunes that have kept HMS Pinafore among the most popular of Gilbert & Sullivan's works since its 1878 premiere.

    Product Description

This live recording of an acclaimed one-off, sold-out performance at the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival captures the wit and fun of Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore.

Heading up a cast that reads like a who's who of the opera world is John Mark Ainsley, Elizabeth Watts and Toby Spence.

Completing the star-studded line up is comedian Tim Brooke-Taylor(The Goodies, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue) as the narrator.

Conductor Richard Egarr (AAM, SCO) applies his extensive knowledge of period performance practice to recreate the sound and style typical of the late 19th century, a first for a G&S recording.HMS Pinafore is rich in comic burlesque, sending up theatrical and operatic conventions and parodying the Italian opera of the day.The tongue-in-cheek writing is apparent from the opening chorus and the music is equally rich in comic pastiche and styles; For he is an Englishman is one of the greatest master-strokes.Climb aboard the HMS Pinafore for a hugely fun seafaring romp!

    Review

The star of any production of Pinafore is Sir Joseph Porter, KCB, and John Mark Ainsley did not disappoint. He was deliciously pompous and selfsatisfied, with occasional slight (and anachronistic) Churchillian overtones in his delivery. The Opera Critics

Wittily narrated by Tim Brooke Taylor, this hilarious piece was sung and acted wonderfully; although frothily accessible, the music is operatic in style and ambition. Conductor Richard Egarr created much more than a concert performance here.Three Weeks

It sounds like everyone involved was having a lot of fun. Richard Egarr, for example: who knew that he was such an affectionate Savoyard? This isn't a performance to break speed records but it's light on it's feet, and the Scottish Opera Orchestra respond with warmth and grace. It was clearly one of those occasions where everyone plays off each other, and with a cast like this, the results are never less than engaging whether it's the chorus, sighing in response to Elizabeth Watts's breathless I love you as Josephine in the Act 1 finale or the orchestra's delicious period- appropriate portamentos and Egarr's easy lilt as Hilary Summers's Buttercup lays out her wares.Summers is particularly adept at bringing out the darker side of Sullivan's mock melodrama, while Watts gives Josephine's The hours creep apace, the full Donizetti treatment, to stellar effect.Gramophone, June issue

The whole presentation is well-rehearsed and the orchestra is excellent. It was nice to see that Scottish Opera follow the D'Oyly Carte with the need for excellent diction…. In many a recording we find there are woodwind lines that fail to come across, but here there is absolute clarity from every section thanks to the sensitive engineering and balance by Philip Hobbs…The CD is attractively presented in a French-style printed card case with booklet that contains excellent notes by Dr David Russell Hulme, plus a full synopsis. This is certainly a worthwhile recording to consider. –Raymond J Walker -Musicweb

For my money Egarr and Co.get the balance between tradition and freshness absolutely spot-on: there's a tremendous sense of affection and conviction from all involved, and never a suggestion of anyone condescending to the material… Working from two recent scholarly editions of the score, Egarr brings out some wonderful orchestral detail which I'd never noticed before (particularly in the big ensembles), and phrases everything with such line and lyricism that any sense of that rum-ti-tum autopilot which often repels Gilbert and Sullivan's detractors is kept consistently at bay. Fingers crossed that he gives the dozen remaining operettas the same treatment! –Katherine Cooper - Presto Disc of the Week

Gilbert's satire on the English class system, political jobbery and hypocrisy, and the navy (Churchill's rum, buggery and the lash farcically sanitised), still resonates, and was a gift for Sullivan's talent for parodying Italian opera. That and its native tunefulness keep the score fresh, as this Scottish Opera performance under Egarr, recorded live at last year's Edinburgh International Festival, happily reminds us. Elizabeth Watts, Toby Spence, John Mark Ainsley, Andrew Foster-Williams and Hilary Summers lead a starry cast. –David Cairns
