Scott Bradlee is an American musician, pianist, composer, and arranger. He is known for his viral videos on YouTube, including his work under the moniker Postmodern Jukebox. Clearly, so does everyone else, as evidenced by PMJ’s presence on concert stages (stateside and abroad) and Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart, where its self-released 2014 opus “Historical Misappropriation” landed in the Top 10 alongside John Coltrane’s “Offering: Live at Temple University” and “All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller.”

For the past several years, I've used the last hour of my weekly performances at Robert Restaurant to offer some commentary on popular culture through the use of musical juxtaposition- or "mashups"- of various recognizable themes. My aim to create a setting where genre and taste distinctions no longer exist, and all songs - both highbrow and populist - are at long last freed from their cultural coded baggage. It is a time for reflection. It is a time for appreciation. It is a time to play ridiculous mashups and still make tips doing so.

This is a collection of some of my own personal favorites from this set, recorded live in stereo (with natural restaurant ambience). So go ahead: call up that special someone, crack a bottle of wine, and enjoy some Mashups By Candlelight.

For my second collection of Mashups By Candlelight, I aimed to demonstrate how musical themes in television and movies can function as vehicles for improvisation, just the same as "pure" popular songs. Indeed, the source material is deliberately more diverse this time around; gangsta rap, metal, jazz and classical themes are represented alongside some choice theme songs and other nostalgic offerings.

Clubbin' with Grandpa (2014) 49:51

1930's / 1940's takes of modern pop tunes. Scott Bradlee and his crew are one of the tightest outfits you've ever heard as it is. Then you add the fantastic vocals, done in the style of classic jazz / nightclub arrangements, and you have absolute gold. I can't listen to modern pop, but when it's reinterpreted this way, it makes me pine for the days when popular music was just that… MUSIC. Hearing "Fancy" arranged as a juke-joint diddy, or "Talk Dirty" with a gypsy backbeat will blow your mind. As a performer, I ache to sing music like this! Take a listen, you won't be sorry.

Casey Abrams is a wonderful addition to the group by bringing that different sound & style. Then there's Von Smith… nuff said. Ariana does an awesome Blank Space! Shoshana Bean, Man she's a beast with one of my favorite 90's song growing up as a kid. Of course Robyn, Cristina, and Ashley are amazing as always. Jealous by Morgan James, u may not like if ur into the original or the Choir version. That being said, she has an AMAZING Voice. Everyone will agree to that. Haley Reinhart grows on you really fast! My only critique is that "Roar" by Annie Goodchild is there. Having bought the other album (Roar EP) I would have added Morgan James' rendition of "Take Me to Church" instead of adding from another album that I already have. Overall the newcomers are amazing bringing in different styles that diversify the Postmodern Jukebox genre so much that even my friends who are into Rap, Metal, are loving the new sound which is truly as someone has already said, "a fresh breathe of new air" in the music scene. Come back to San Fran!
