Hans Zender - Schubert's Winterreise - A Composed Interpretation

Zender has orchestrated the piano part and 'modernized' the songs, in what he calls a creative transformation. Song structures
are broken, reformed, elements given new voices (Zender doesn't even shun the use of wind and rain machine). Sometimes this
approach can feel provocative, but in a song like 'Die Nebensonnen', where the parts are unhinged as in a terrifying schizophrenic
state of mind, the 'modern' view really adds to the drama. Peter Blochwitz and the ensemble modern perform it exemplary.
