Johann Schop [c. 1590-1667] was director of town music in Hamburg for much of the period overshadowed by the Thirty Years War (1618-48). After the war, he worked in the city until 1665, and died two years later. He was a virtuoso violinist and it is no surprise that he seems to have been highly regarded by the other town musicians; his successor in Hamburg, Dietrich Becker, wrote a posthumous tribute praising Schop's part in improving the 'Hamburg instrumental music' although it is unclear if Becker was referring to the repertory or the standard of playing. Despite this apparent fame in his own time, Schop's music remains almost unknown. […]
