Schoeck was a Swiss late-Romantic composer and conductor who studied under Max Reger. He is mainly known for his contributions to the Lieder genre, of which he wrote a few hundred. This his first song cycle, "Elegie", is one of the exceptions as it is not scored for piano but for chamber orchestra. Schoeck admitted it reflected his longlasting but troubled romance with the pianiste Mary de Senger from Genève, which no doubt accounts for the pervasing autumnal feel to the typical late Romantic idiom of this cycle.
Gramophone 8 / 98: 'A wonderful record. This is one of the outstanding song-cycles of its period, very naturally recorded, and one of the finest vocal discs I have heard for a long time: its beauties resonate in the mind long after you have played it. I cannot recommend it too strongly.'
