Classical / Contemporary Classical / Concerto

The Third Concerto is scored for a wind-heavy chamber orchestra and ranges across a musical landscape that includes Mahler, Schubert, Russian Orthodox chant, Berg, and Hindemith, yet remains a fascinating personal statement. The magnificent Fourth is the prize of the set, one of the century's most profound and disturbing concertos. Written for Kremer in 1984, it has lyrical passages of ethereal beauty, but also jagged, violent orchestral eruptions that silence the lone violin, reducing it to silent gestures.

Concerto n ° 3 with chamber orchestra accompaniment (4 strings and winds) from 1978 as well as n ° 4 (1984) with traditional orchestra reinforced with an important percussion and dedicated to G. Kremer are much more interesting than the first two of its kind. Schnittke revives the harmonic and the melodic after the conservative dead end of 1 and the dodecaphonic dead end of 2. For my part, it's the Schnittke that I like, proof that we can make good or even very good music with a classical material: research of original sounds creating an atmosphere, worked melodies, mixtures of different musical traditions. Many composers of the 20th century went astray for a while on the path of 50s serialism held by a few thinking heads with strong paces of intellectual dictatorship and which became the obligatory passage of any composer "of his time". Fortunately, seeing the dryness and hermeticism of this technique, it took them not to backtrack but to renew their sound language. As Schönberg said "you can still write many masterpieces in C major"! Excellent performance by the composer's regulars.
