The chamber works on this recording encompass a variety of instrumental groupings and a range of moods from the humour and lightness of the Serenade to the serious magnificence of the Piano Quintet, a five-movement ‘memorial’ developing the tradition of so great a work as Shostakovich’s single-movement work for this combination. The Three Madrigals set a three-language cycle of miniature poems by Francisco Tanzer, poems which themselves encapsulates much that is distinctively Schnittke through their epigrammatic atmosphere of cryptic completeness.

The programme is well chosen. Schnittke’s Serenade of 1968 is one of his most exuberant and engaging pieces and is not otherwise available on CD; the Three Madrigals of 1960, expressionist fragments somewhat after the Schoenberg Herzgewachse model, can only be had on a Mobile Fidelity issue, difficult to come by in Britain; the Quintet and Trio are arguably the finest of all Schnittke’s chamber compositions.
Given that all the performances are more than competent and are cleanly recorded, that may be sufficient recommendation. On the other hand, just a few bars of the comparative versions are enough to show that there is far more to be put across. For all their careful preparation and skill, the players of Capricorn do not uncover the hidden core of Schnittke’s expressive world – the shell-shocked numbness, the outrage and pain behind the notes.
For stop-gap performances of the Madrigals and the Serenade this remains a valuable issue. For revelations of the true quality of the Quintet and the Trio I suggest staying with the listed alternatives and keeping fingers crossed that comparable versions of the other two works will eventually come along.'
