It is coming up to five years since Sarah Chang, then in her early teens, made her brilliant and moving concerto recording debut in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on EMI (12/93). Her concerto recordings for the label since then have been of brilliant showpiece works like the Lalo Symphonie espagnole (5/96) and the Paganini First Concerto (1/95) rather than of the central repertory. It is good here to have her remarkable artistry revealed again at full stretch in astonishingly mature interpretations of the Mendelssohn and Sibelius concertos.

If at the very start of the Mendelssohn, with her silvery, sweet tone, Chang momentarily seems too relaxed, not at all challenged, tension quickly develops. Though her readings always keep a degree of restraint, less passionate than those recorded by, for example, the young Kyung-Wha Chung, the intensity of feeling is never in doubt. In the crucial bridge passage into the second subject of the Mendelssohn, the purity and refinement are ravishing, with Chang allowing herself a daringly extreme rallentando which yet has nothing sentimental in it (track 1, 2'58''). Similarly in the slow movement she adopts a measured speed, but never lets it sound sticky, when her expressiveness, always spontaneous-sounding, tends to press forward rather than to hold back. The finale brings a quicksilver performance of fairy-like lightness, which yet builds to a satisfyingly strong culmination in the coda.

A possible reservation is over the recording, which, transferred at a low level, needs to be played at quite a high level if the performance is to make its full impact. Both in the studio recording of the Mendelssohn – made in the old, rightly admired Berlin venue of the Jesus Christus-Kirche in Dahlem – and in the live recording of the Sibelius, made in the Philharmonie, there is a slight distancing both of the soloist and of the orchestra. The balance certainly enhances Chang’s sweetness and refinement, and the difference of sound between the two venues is minimized by the EMI engineers, working from Abbey Road. Both offer full, well-cushioned orchestral recording, slightly bass-heavy, rather cleaner on inner detail in the Dahlem venue.

The Sibelius interpretation is just as magnetic as that of the Mendelssohn, a live account that betrays no signs of stress or strain, again marked out by its lightness, refinement and poise. Not that this is in any way a cool reading, and the finale, with Chang clean and precise in articulation, builds up with ample power, thanks also to Jansons, who draws Sibelius playing from the Berlin Philharmonic just as committed as that under Karajan in the old days. Surprisingly, even with two such popular concertos, this is an extremely rare coupling, and whatever the claims of rival versions, this stands as the strongest possible recommendation for anyone wanting both works together.'
