Fourteen years ago Saena appeared, the self-titled album by a group formed at that time by José Luis Fernández Ledesma (guitars, Rhodes piano, synthesizer), Margarita Botello (voice, piano, accordion, percussion), Alejandro Sánchez (ex-Decibel, ex-Nazca , on acoustic and electric violin), Hugo Santos (grand stick, fretless bass and loops) and Adrián Zárate (drums).

The plate was a sample of the high flying of a quintet commanded by a composer (Fernández Ledesma) who has already left an important mark with works with Nirgal Vallis, alone and alongside Margarita Botello, including Sol central, a work included in the book 100 essential records of Mexican rock.

Saena, it is told in the booklet of that first CD, is the king of the birds, who dwells in the distant mountain of Haraiti Bareza and whose splendid feather summons the birds eager to meet him on a journey of many years and in which they will cross seven immense valleys. In the end, only thirty birds can arrive, and when they see their faces illuminated by the sun's rays, they discover in their reflection that Saena is each and every one of them.

Last year, Eternal Days (Discos Azafrán) began to circulate, a work that comes to quench the thirst of the group's followers. It has been a long period of waiting, caused by different vicissitudes, losses and line-up changes. They have become a quartet in which Fernández Ledesma and Margarita Botello remain and now Eduardo Fierro (drums, percussion) and Adrián Plowes (warr guitar) have been added.

Eternal Days opens with “Fin de blues”, a cut inscribed in an apparently symphonic progressive vein, but its structure is more complex, it brings it closer to a rock sound in opposition in which echoes of Univers Zero are noticed. Halfway through the track, the tension grows, the end of blues is approaching, which is not the end of a genre, but rather the end of a sadness.

In “Pos rock”, the tone of the album is maintained, the cohesion of the group is felt in the solidity of the cut, in which we find continuous stops. The voice appears for the first time and lowers to “mundane” ground what was previously pure elevation. They shine, without losing themselves in a virtuoso onanism, each one of the instrumentalists. Plowes gives depth, more body to the warr guitar; Iron, consistency and strength in the battery.

It is a cut in which we find one of the main attributes of the music not only of Saena, but of the entire work of José Luis Fernández Ledesma, because although his work is complex, at the same time he manages to be kind to the listener. , extends an invitation to follow him and a sample is in “Musetta”, in which the accordion prints a false folk tone; false, because they are flashes, a resource, in reality it is closer to the Hispano-American lands, perhaps to tango, to Buenos Aires music that obviously intersects, rather harmonizes, with the maelstrom of rock and once that merger, we entered totally progressive terrain. The voice has just given those heavenly tones, nostalgic at times, that the accordion delivers. There is a beautiful violin part by Alejandro Sánchez, who appears as a guest.
