Grigory Ginsburg is another of those obscure Russian pianists whose LPs are highly sought by collectors. He was a major league virtuoso with an outgoing temperament, although he could give intelligent performances of mainstream classical music as well. In these Liszt transcriptions, despite the rather limited mono sound, his playing is extremely exciting and gratifying. What a pleasure to hear those melodies sing and those runs so dazzlingly played. This is one of the most valuable issues in the Russian Piano School series, and ought to be followed by an extensive or even complete Ginsburg Edition. –Leslie Gerber
