Rotten River Blues Band - Long Necks And Delta Waves (2018)

10,000 years ago Finland was still in the grip of the latest ice age. Soon after, the glaciers started to melt, forming vast icy torrents flowing into the newly formed sea. As the millennia passed, one of these ancient riverbeds became Mätäjoki (’Rotten River’), which has long been the source for many a mythical tale.

It is from this mud-infused folklore that the Rotten River Blues Band also get their influence. The roots of the band are firmly planted in the swamps of upstream Mätäjoki, but you can also hear distinct echoes of American blues streams in the group’s music. Despite having one foot deep in the tradition, this music isn’t stuck in centuries past; rather, it opens a window into the current state of blues rock in southern Finland.

Long Necks and Delta Waves marks the first recording of the group that’s played together for some years now. It leads the listener deep into the Rotten River mindset. Imagine a stream of music and words, where single songs represent the tales recited on the riverbanks; Long Necks and Delta Waves is its massive delta that gathers all the tributaries and tales and leads them into one big ocean of blues.
