In the mid '70s, '50s nostalgia was alive and well. But in the '90s, retro trends ranged from '70s nostalgia to '40s nostalgia. It was amusing to see post-Baby Boomers wearing the bell bottoms and platform shoes of their Baby Boomer parents, and it was even more amusing to see them doing the lindy hop or the jitterbug (dances from their grandparents' youth!), wearing '40s attire and looking like they just stepped out of an old film-noir classic with Edward G. Robinson or James Cagney.

Embracing jump blues and jive and often combining them with early rock & roll, countless retro-'40s bands emerged in the '90s, ranging from the cornball to the soulful. On Straight Up, Ron Sunshine & Full Swing never sound corny and never reduce '40s or late '30s music to a silly cliché. You get the impression that these guys are coming from the heart when they tear into both original songs and covers of such classics as Slim & Slam's "Hit That Jive, Jack" and Charlie Shavers' "Undecided." Although you can easily pinpoint Sunshine's main influences (which include Louis Jordan and Louis Prima as well as the Nat "King" Cole Trio), it's also nice to hear that the band has an identity of its own. Straight Up is definitely one of the most appealing retro-'40s recordings of the late '90s. ~ AllMusic Review by Alex Henderson
