Between 1851 and 1853, Robert Schumann composed his three violin sonatas in bursts of creative activity that also yielded the Violin Concerto and the Fantasy for violin and orchestra; he was encouraged to compose violin music by the leader of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Ferdinand David, who later performed the sonatas. These chamber works went on to become popular in the 19th century and have remained in the repertoire, despite being less frequently played than Schumann's earlier chamber compositions. The dark final period of the composer's life may have been anticipated in these brooding minor-key works, and critics have sometimes suspected mental deterioration at the root of their formal and technical difficulties. However, Schumann's melancholy moods and brooding melodies are also attractive and compelling, perhaps for the same reasons, and there is much passion and volatility in these sonatas that fans of Romantic music actively seek out. Violinist Ulf Wallin and pianist Roland Pöntinen recorded the Sonata No. 1 in 2009 in Stockholm and the remaining sonatas in 2010 in Berlin, and there is a noticeable improvement in sound quality in the later recordings, possibly due to closer microphone placement and more resonant acoustics. Even so, Wallin and Pöntinen are consistent in their penetrating interpretations and they deliver handsome performances that hold the album together and make it a fine artistic achievement.
