Richie Cole meets up with fellow altoist Hank Crawford on a spirited concert set. With guitarist Emily Remler, bassist Marshall Hawkins and drummer Victor Jones, Cole and Crawford romp on such numbers as "Confirmation," "Fantasy Blues," "Samba De Orpheus" and "Cherokee." This jam session date has its exciting moments and is easily recommended to bebop fans.
…pardon the pun, but that is simply one of the ways I can put the superlatives together on this offering by Cole/Crawford and band recorded in Nimes, France in 1987. It is tasty jazz done in jam session style–everyone gets a solo. I am much impressed with Emily Remler's guitar work on the Cole/Crawford composition "Fantasy Blues"…Victor Jones on drums and Marshall Hawkins on bass completes the quintet. I cannot say if they ever recorded anything with each other again–and, if they have in whole or part, please inform me–but I'm awfully glad they recorded this. I love the heck out of it.
