This is the first of the two Ballads albums recorded in Japan in 1986-1987 by the inimitable Richie Beirach. I've been trying to get them for many years, but they have been nearly impossible to track down. Now finally, they are being reissued on the Japanese Sony label.
The music is great- it's Richie Beirach playing a mix of his marvelous originals and a few standards. It's great to hear these solo versions of Elm, Nightlake, Leaving and Sunday Song. As usual, Richie's playing is impeccable-the mood goes from eligaic to dark and brooding. There's also a wonderful letter perfect hommage to Bill Evans on his version of My Foolish Heart. Beirach's version of Somewhere Over the Rinbow has to be one of the most original takes on this tune I've ever heard. It goes way out into "code land" ( Dave Liebman calls Richie "The Code",) and back again into the lush traditional reharmonizations we are more familiar with. Wonderfully inventive stuff.

Romantic, lyrical, dark, a bit classical, swinging, and occasionally heady and somewhat abstract-all these things and always technically perfect: that's the combination of qualities that make Richie Beirach so great.
The recordings themselves are perfect. It's hard to imagine a better piano sound-steely when it needs to be, soft and lush in the quieter passages. This being a Beirch recording, the term "ballad" is loosely applied, as he does double tempos up once in a while and there's some fiery playing here and there as well. All in all, though, it's a pretty introverted affair. It's a must-have for Beirach lovers. Don't forget to pick up the 2nd CD which features more standards and several lesser known originals,(The Pearl, Zal, and DL.)
Both albums are worthy editions to any jazz lovers collection. And if you're a Richie fan as I am, you're going to want to get these.
