Riccardo Fassi has often worked around the music of Frank Zappa and, with the Tankio Band, had already recorded in the nineties a first homage to the genius and opera of the great Italian-American composer. Go back to Zappa's material with an articulated, full-bodied project rich in guests and suggestions, able to enter and exit the "non canonical canon" designed by compositions and Zappish interpretations.
Fassi conceives a kind of "concert": the seventeen tracks are articulated around ten tracks of Zappa, with introductions and queues, two improvisations conducted by Fassi along with Antonello Salis and Uncle Remus by George Duke. In nearly seventy minutes overall, many things happen, following the spirit of the tutelary labor number. First of all, the presence of Napoleon Murphy Brock, which ensures a strong proximity to the original matrix. The Tankio Band is approaching this edition of the big band's size: as in his costume, Fassi plays with the sound, alongside the sound of the tube with the trombones, and adds the vibraphone's liquidity to the overall sound of the organics. The choice of guests leads to the many collaborations crossed by the pianist and arranger: the stylistic variety brought by the involved musicians effectively combines with the repertoire faced and allows to rerecide each time the record pace.
By scrolling through the list of members of the Tankio Band, there are many experienced musicians, often of leading groups and orchestral formations.
An element that allows precise management of sounds, individual themes and overall work. And this is the aspect that allows the project to be strengthened: apart from some variation, training has a solid core that is found under its insignia for many years and is able to concretely translate Fassi's ideas and direction. The operation is convincing just to respect and reproduce the songs in a convincing manner but without crushing into a series of impersonal coverings: the "original" digit of the work is in the general reinterpretation rather than in the search for fine effects in itself but considering what the surprise and distortion rate is already in Zappa's version, and how complex the mechanisms of its score are.
Twenty-four years have passed since Frank Zappa's death, so we should have a sufficient time distance to understand the musical legacy of this great artist, a corpus of over one hundred titles between work done during his life and posthumous publications. "A key feature of Frank Zappa's music is its extreme topicality," Fassi tells the story with the disc. And this The quantity and quality of the material, its iconoclastic and integrating figure, its ability to transcend the boundaries between genres and play simultaneously on multiple levels of meaning, its talent of instrumentalist and organizer of sounds and for many other reasons yet. All the reasons that make it absolutely necessary to compare with his music and his aesthetic vision.
