The major news from this release by the Chamber Orchestra of New York under Salvatore Di Vittorio is the Respighi Concerto all'Antica for violin and orchestra, which here receives its world premiere. The work has an interesting history, presented here in a note co-authored by one Norberto Cordisco Respighi, perhaps the composer's nephew. Somewhat resembling the phony Baroque violin works of Fritz Kreisler stylistically, it was presented in 1909 by Respighi as a "Concerto in an Ancient Style by an Anonymous Composer, revised and orchestrated by Ottorino Respighi," who later fessed up to being the anonymous composer and said that he was having a bit of fun at the expense of German critics.

Later, the work surfaced as the Concerto in la minore for violin with orchestra (XVIII century style); for many decades, it disappeared, partly due to the eclipse of Respighi's reputation at the hands of the high modernists and partly due to Respighi's distaste for his own early music. The autograph score appeared in 1990, but a usable edition was first made only in 2019 by Di Vittorio. It's much more than a curiosity, with an exuberant style hanging somewhere between Vivaldi and Mozart, and the performance here by violinist Davide Alogna captures its sense of fun. This is unlikely to be its last recording. The work also points to one of the undisputed Respighi masterpieces, the Ancient Airs and Dances, where the composer had reduced his neoclassic language to its essentials. This, too, receives a strong and somewhat unusual performance from Di Vittorio, who avoids Satie-like smoothness in the Italiana movement in favor of a more urgent style. This is certainly a major Respighi release.
