… the present set, which was recorded in 1965 with Dame Janet Baker as Phedre and John Shirley-Quirk as Thesee. The conductor, Sir Anthony Lewis, followed Rameau's first version of 1733, though unlike Minkowski, who also broadly speaking followed this, he omitted the Prologue. Other small cuts, mainly affecting the instrumental pieces, were also made, all this resulting in a playing time some 21 minutes shorter than in the Archiv set.
This is, in short, a powerful realization of Rameau's first dramatic masterpiece. It cannot … take precedence over Minkowski's complete and stylistically more authoritative reading but it will be for ever treasured by those who recognize in the contributions of Baker and Shirley-Quirk a profound and moving account of their tragic predicament.
