The Queers - Later Days And Better Lays (1999) RESTORED

It was May 5, 1991 according to the track sheet of the session. Chris, Hugh and I had been together maybe 8 months - we had 14 songs we wanted to record and did 'em all pretty much live except for a couple of over dubbed rhythm tracks. All in one day. We were inexcusably shitfaced and pretty much broke as was usual in those days. I was co-owner of a cafe/bar in Exeter, NH called Joe's place - Chris and Hugh washed dishes there - things were desperate. I made no money to speak of - we just wanted to do one great punk rock album that we'd release ourselves and play with Screeching Weasel at least once. Anyway - the first 14 songs on this CD were done to give Ben Weasel a tape of our new shit and we never released this session 'till now. In a lot ways it's better than "Love Songs For The Retarded" 'cause we played better for this tape - we were more relaxed. When we finally went out to do "Love Songs", Larry Livermore was there and we didn't really know him. It came out good, but this tape is more indicative of what we sounded like when we first got together. We also put on 3 songs from the "Bubblegum Dreams" 7" and some stuff from "Don't Back Down" session that's have never been on CD before.

~ Joe King, December 1998 (from booklet note)

    Classic Queers from the vault
Joe King opens the vault and unleashes an album of previously "lost" demo tapes and studio recordings from the early 90's, featuring the lineup that to most fans represents the "classic" Queers – Joe, B-Face on bass, and the late Hugh O'Neill on drums. You've heard most of these songs before but these recordings tend to be a bit more raw than the versions you already own. You can hear the Ramones influence loud & clear and a bit of the Beach Boys, as well as a lot of Angry Samoans, resulting in some politically-incorrect lyrics that are still funny as, well, heck. Listen to the drums and check out how perfectly Hugh could recreate that Tommy Ramone syncopated backbeat. If you're a Queers fan, you need this; if you've never heard the band before, this is a pretty good introduction to what all the fuss is about.
