Laura Love is an american songwriter, singer and bass guitar player. Anyone who has heard her extraordinary melodies, lyrics and voice knows her magical musical presence. She draws from american blues, soul and jazz influences and mixes them with african and celtic rhythms, creating a style she calls "Afro-Celtic". American indian-style chanting and yodeling add an "other-wordly" dimension to her songs. Listen to this rare Putumayo album. You will be pleasantly surprised by a great talent. Laura Love was just another bass player on the Seattle grunge scene until a critic chastised her for wasting her talents in an "annoyingly pointless" band called Boom Boom G.I. Smacked with a midlife crisis before her time, she began writing songs which abandoned grunge altogether in favor of a uniquely eclectic mix of influences from around the world. So far-flung are these influences, in fact, that the all-American girl signed her first record contract with a world music label, Putumayo. The sole product of that contract is this anthology, which features highlights from her first three albums (all of which were issued on her own Octoroon Biography label). The Collection is an excellent introduction to Love's distinctive style, which she calls "Afro-Celtic." That's as good a description as any, but it fails to capture the breadth of her eclecticism. Her funky bass-plucking draws on soul and R&B, but her raw-but-rangy vocals seem most influenced by the blues and bluegrass. The widely varied rhythms come chiefly from African percussion, while the fiddling, pennywhistling, reeling, and balladeering of the Irish are littered throughout the album. The songs lack pop polish, favoring the authentic roughness of low-income musical traditions, both urban and rural. There are also healthy doses of Native American spirit, rock & roll drive, European yodeling, Harlem-style street poetry, and jazz swing. But the most inventive element of her songcraft is the dynamic vocal arrangement she gives to her memorable melodies. It seems impossible not to become engaged by the hyper harmonies, which lend considerable sophistication to bouncy lines like "A Ha Me a Riddle I Day" and "I d'nuh I d'nuh I d'nuh I do not always think less is more." Everyone who hears this CD at our house or while we are traveling, just raves about it. There is not a single "bad" song on it - they are all absolute keepers. Laura Love's voice and style are unique and her guitar playing is terrific. Her vocal range is wide and singing style eclectic. All the other vocals melded wonderfully on each song. My granddaughter loves the CD and would play it constantly if I'd let her! I'm looking forward to hearing Laura's other CDs. Laura if you're checking these reviews - thanks for being so kind to the "daughter of my heart" after one of your gigs with WVPR's Mountain Stage. You may recall she was severely burned. She didn't take the CD you signed for her back to Bolivia because no one she knows has a CD player, but we got her a tape and she says everyone there really likes it even if they can't understand the words! She made me take a picture of her with the CD so she would always remember you. She said that you treated her just like a regular kid and looked at her like she was pretty. What exactly is afro-celtic, you ask? Buy the CD and find out. I also dig Laura's yodeling - she puts the "yo" in yodel. I first heard Laura play the Chico World Music festival, then listened to this CD all summer and never got tired of it. I now own it as a sort of "momento" of that summer, but the songs are still fresh and lively as ever. A good, wholesome rockin' CD for kids and adults alike. Support a great artist and buy this CD! The liner notes also include an interesting history of her life (written by Laura herself), which makes you appreciate even more her talent and her accomplishments, despite the serious hardships in her life.
Laura Love is absolutely the most interesting new artist I've heard in years and this collection is a great intro. The music moves, the lyrics are thoughtful, the voice is fantastic (I don't think anyone else could turn a yodel into a moving experience!). All I can say is MORE, MORE, MORE.
This cd is wonderful. As a reviewer already said, but is really true there isn't a bad song on this collection. Laura's bass playing is incredible, her vocal style unique and wonderful, and her songs are well thought out, catchy and iintelligent I would recommend to anyone considering this cd to get it.
