Putumayo is to be congratulated for this roundup of, as they call them, "America's greatest contemporary blues artists." That statement is always going to be up for debate, but kudos for stepping beyond the big names to highlight some lesser-known, but equally important, talent. Arthur Adams, for example, has a wonderful voice that he uses smoothly on "Get Next to Me" (although B.B. King's solo fires the piece to a higher level). And some of the acoustic tracks are absolute joys, like Chris Thomas King's "Why Blues?" It would have been nice to have heard something more recent from Taj Mahal's extensive catalog than "Cakewalk into Town," which almost qualifies as vintage – but it's still majestic. Ruth Brown, Sugar Pie DeSanto, and Susan Tedeschi show that women get the blues too, with Tedeschi firing off some stinging guitar. Whether Solomon Burke really qualifies as a blues singer is debatable – to many he'll always be one of soul's kings – but his voice remains an impressive vehicle. However, it's good to see Sunpie Barnes and Henry Gray get exposure. Perhaps next time they can extend their range to include people like Otis Taylor who are reinventing the meaning of the blues. The fourth installment in Putumayo's line of American traditional music, Americana collects a surprising series of roots music – alternative country, if you will. There are hints of regional styles embedded here and there, bluegrass throughout, and a healthy dose of the folk aesthetic for good measure. The album opens with a fairly representative piece from the genre, using bluegrass as a base, with religious music woven into the sound. Mulehead provides an exceptional use of space in their lyrical delivery on "Frankie Lee," and Norah Jones' latest venture, the Little Willies, puts out a nice little bluesy groove. As the album rolls on, Eliza Lynn plays some piano blues that almost sound like a lost piece of the Doors' catalog, the Old Crow Medicine Show mixes traditional fiddling and strumming with something of a modern innuendo, and Tim O'Brien remakes the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun" in a deep bluegrass mode and a thumping delivery almost reminiscent of Leadbelly. The sound becomes a little more folk-based in the closing pieces, with Terri Hendrix and Josh Ritter providing some nice examples of the thicker acoustic guitar and softer vocal delivery. The album closes on a more soulful piece from Ruthie Foster, ending on an uplifting number with a little more staying power. Alternative country is still something of a fringe genre, not quite streamlined enough for the mainstream fans, but just eclectic enough for the NPR crowd. The pieces on this album are good enough to enter the public consciousness if they can be heard, but the genre is likely to stay on the fringe nonetheless. Pick it up as a fan of American roots music, or as someone who doesn't quite have the stomach for mainstream country, but still wants to hear the acoustic guitars and fiddles.TRACKLISTAdam Greenberg, All Music

Bluegrass offers insight into the variations within the genre, from the mesmerizing vocals and skillful instrumentation of Alison Krauss and Union Station (“Every Time You Say Goodbye”) to Railroad Earth’s contemporary newgrass sound on “Been Down This Road.” Then there’s the lively rendition of “Jackaroo,” by legends David Grisman and Jerry Garcia, alongside the soft, contemporary sounds of Andrea Zonn with Alison Brown.
Frank Solivan’s “Across the Great Divide” and Peter Rowan’s “Man of Constant Sorrow,” transport listeners with their earthy, newgrass style. James Alan Shelton brings his beautiful melody-oriented guitar playing to the traditional song “Shady Grove,” and Crooked Still adds a modern bluegrass sound to “New Railroad.” One of bluegrass music’s longest performing groups, The Seldom Scene, provides their distinctive vocals and picking to the Dylan classic “Boots of Spanish Leather” followed by the versatile all-girl string band Uncle Earle on “The Last Goodbye.” Young North Carolina natives Town Mountain contribute their original, traditional bluegrass stylings with “Diggin’ On The Mountainside,” while the inimitable Sam Bush, brings his beloved mandolin playing to “Diamond Joe.” The album closes with a rendition of the gospel favorite “I’ll Fly Away,” performed by a variety of talented artists.Putumayo site

Putumayo’s founder, Dan Storper, comments on his increased exposure to jazz since moving to New Orleans: “Over the past few years, I’ve heard jazz virtually seeping from the pores of this city, the birthplace of jazz. Listening to Joel Dinerstein on WWOZ reminded me of how much I still loved the songs of my parents’ generation and that selecting exceptional, relatively obscure songs by many of their favorites would help introduce many of these great artists to a new generation.” The inimitable Nina Simone opens the collection with “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” one of her most recognizable songs. Nat King Cole’s velvet vocals and accomplished jazz piano skills are showcased on the swinging “’Deed I Do,” recorded during his early days helming The King Cole Trio. One of the most recognizable voices of the swing era, Maxine Sullivan contributes “’Taint No Use," on which she ruminates over a romance that has run its course.
Jazz piano virtuoso Oscar Peterson accompanies Louis Armstrong, inventor of the modern popular jazz vocal, who delivers a spare but upbeat solo on “I Was Doing All Right.” “Swing tenor” saxophonist Zoot Sims, who recorded more than 50 albums during his career, honors George and Ira Gershwin on an album that features many beloved standards, including “Someone to Watch Over Me." Jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker, who rose to stardom on equal parts talent and charismatic edginess , sings a soft, ethereal tenor on "There Will Never Be Another You."
Pioneering jazz vocalist Anita O'Day contributes a husky-voiced rendition of “It Don’t Mean a Thing” and self-taught swing pianist Hampton Hawes follows with the gospel-infused “Sermon.” Coquettish jazz singer Blossom Dearie injects her signature wry humor and poetic phrasing into “They Say It’s Spring.” Composer, pianist and vocalist Mose Alison, whose music has been covered by Pete Townsend, Bonnie Raitt and others, contributes the classic swing valentine "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."
