"Free but lonely" is the romantic life's motto of the violonist Joseph Joachim, who was sponsored by Mendelssohn and Schumann and through his friendship with Clara Schumann and Brahms matured into one of the most influential musicians of the 19th century. "F.A.E.", a series of notes derived from this motto, was also the title of a viloin sonata, composed jointly for him in 1853 by Schumann, Brahms and Albert Dietrich.
"Free but lonely" is the title of a series of CDs presenting music by the composers close to Joseph Joachim, and by Joachim himself. This opens up a fascinating panorama of romatic music, born from the fruitful exchange of ideas between famous and little known composers whose works deserve to be discovered.
"F - A - E", eine aus diesem Motto gewonnene Tonfolge, war auch der Titel einer Violinsonate, die Schumann, Brahms und Albert Dietrich im Jahre 1853 gemeinsam für ihn komponierten. - "Frei, aber einsam" ist das Signet einer Reihe von CDs, in der Musik von Komponisten, die in näherer Beziehung zu Joseph Joachim standen, sowie Werke von ihm selbst (z. T. erstmals) vorgestellt werden. Damit eröffnet sich ein faszinierendes Panorama romantischer Musik, von fruchtbarem Gedankenaustausch zwischen bekannten und unbekannten Komponisten, deren Werke es zu entdecken gilt. Stereoplay (höchste Bewertung für Interpretation, Klang und Repertoire): "Hier finden wir das genaue Gegenteil zu dem derzeit gängigen Weichspüler-Spiel. Keine überzeichnete Geige im Spotlight mit einem Klavierbutler im Hintergrund - sondern intensives Musizieren, Ausleuchten, Zeit nehmen, damit sich Stimmungen entwickeln können, Duo-Qualitäten… Ich wurde beim Hören in einem Maße von der Sonate in Beschlag genommen, daß mir die Interpreten völlig aus dem Sinn kamen. Joseph Joachims jeweils 3 Stücke op. 2 und 3 sowie die Romanze C-Dur mit Titeln wie Frühlingsfantasie, Lindenrauschen, Abendglocken usw. leben von der Kunst des Erzählens, Fabulierens und der Atmosphäre. Da bleiben bei Paul-Wollenweber keine Wünsche offen." NZ: "… Joachim verfolgte das Komponieren, obwohl immer wieder von namhaften Kollegen ermuntert, mit größter Selbstkritik, so daß nur wenige Werke gedruckt wurden. Dies erstaunt um so mehr, als alle hier vorgelegten Stücke doch mehr als bloße Fingerübungen, sondern vielmehr höchst originelle und im Falle des op. 5 mitreißende Werke darstellen. Diese Qualität kommt in der differenzierten, einfühlsamen und energiegeladenen Interpretation durch Birgitta Wollenweber und Florin Paul überzeugend zur Geltung."
