Paolo Conte - Plays Jazz (2008)

Paolo Conte is the most internationally successful of the Italian singer-songwriters who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. He is also among the most idiosyncratic, eclectic and unusual exponents of what Franco Fabbri has defined as the canzone d’autore (author’s song). Nonetheless he remains a rather arcane, cult figure in the Anglophone world – an example of what Simon Frith has called ‘the unpopular popular’. A combination of apparent opposites – the provincial and the cosmopolitan – his music appropriates a global sweep of influences without being definable as ‘world music’. Characteristics of both his rough, untrained singing style and wry, ironic and opaque compositions have strong affinities with US singer-songwriters like Tom Waits and Randy Newman, and he draws heavily on early American jazz influences, although he remains quintessentially Italian. This makes him difficult to categorise in the world music market.

A very rare stuff: recordings by Paolo Conte in 1962, as a vibraphonist playing in bands as "Paul Conte Quartet", "Lazy River Band Society" or "Gianni Sanjust Middle Jazz Sextet", among others. An archeological jewel.

Uscirà il prossimo 12 settembre "Paolo conte plays jazz", una compilation che raccoglie alcune rare registrazioni in cui Conte suona jazz.
Per la prima volta escono in cd le prime registrazioni discografiche in cui Paolo Conte suona Jazz. Sono registrazioni originali per la maggior parte irreperibili su disco da decine di anni, in quanto se ne erano perse le tracce. Oggi, grazie ad una ricerca accurata negli archivi storici, sono state recuperate e finalmente pubblicate in questo straordinario album, intitolato Paolo Conte Plays Jazz. L’interessante tracklist contiene brani come Christopher Columbus, I Cover the Waterfront, More Than You Know e Out of Nowhere originariamente inclusi nell’extended play “The italian way to swing”, del Paul Conte Quartet (Paolo Conte al vibrafono), uscito nel 1962 su etichetta RCA Victor.
L’accurata selezione comprende inoltre Original Dixieland One Step, Fidgety Feed e Indiana, pezzi pubblicati in un’antologia del 1961, “The italian way to dixieland” (ancora RCA Victor), e sono eseguiti dalla Lazy River Band Society, della quale Paolo Conte era pianista e vibrafonista. Le tracce Between The Devin and The Deep Blue Sea, Take the “A” Train, Stardust e Flying Home sono state, invece pubblicate dalla Ricordi in un’antologia del 1962, “I grandi temi del jazz – Lo swing”, e sono eseguiti dal Gianni Sanjust Middle Jazz Sextet, con Paolo Conte al vibrafono.

L’album prosegue poi con Big Butter And Egg Man From West e ancora Flying Home, tratti da un 33 giri del 1982 della Dr. Dixie Jazz Band, per chiudersi infine con due brani di Bruno Lauzi intitolati Our Love Is Here to Say e My Funny Valentine, presenti nel suo album del 1985 “Back to jazz”: in tutti questi Paolo Conte è “guest star” al vibrafono. Ricordiamo infine che il 19 settembre invece sarà pubblicato un best of "Blue Swing – Greatest Hits", una raccolta in due cd con brani degli anni 70/80.
