Though these two pianists are a generation apart, there is much love suffused in this swinging duo's playing. The dialogue between the two players is so seamless it's hard to tell who's playing when. And no, two pianos isn't too much when the players are as sensitive and understanding of each other as these two. If one plays a swinging single-note line, the other punches rhythmic chordal accompaniment, if one plays tight chords in the high register, the other lays down resonant pads underneath.
Peterson and Green never get in each other's way or let things get too busy. On "Spring is Here," the two pianos tumble together in a cacophony of chords, evoking the willful randomness of Mother Nature. Likewise, they trip playfully through Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" as the melody descends. The unison playing on the bebop tune "Scrapple From The Apple" comes late in the program as a sort of culmination, the two players swinging together perfectly as one
