The tale of the Italian progressive rock band Osanna is long and storied but perhaps the most important factor is that through thick and thin they are still with us. Today the band is made up of Lino Vairetti (vocals), Gennaro Barba (drums), Irvin Vairetti (keyboards and vocals), Sasà Priore (keyboards), Pasquale Capobianco (guitar), and Nello D'Anna (bass). It is this line-up that we hear performing from a 2011 concert recorded in Japan. If you are a fan of the classic Italian symphonic style this is a disc that will be right up your alley. Better yet if you like live performances.

Rosso Rock primarily features an orchestral arrangement of the completeMilano Calibro 9 album along with a couple new studio recordings from the band. Originally released in 1972 under the title, Preludio, tema, variazioni, canzona, it became the soundtrack to the film Milano Calibro 9, hence the name change. Here, live it gets a complete makeover, while still retaining all the elements that make Italian symphonic prog what it is. Typical for this aspect of the genre, the songs are shorter but more complex. A defining trademark if Italian prog is that they never play in one place for very long, and this is accentuated given its film score style. The music is about propelling the visuals. So you have musical themes that run from opening flutes, into sawing violins interrupted by speedy guitar solos or widdley synth lines, and then it’s back to the sawing violins, then it’s everyone together. It’s quite magical and most definitely heavy on the symphonic aspect. The other prominent aspect is the melodies. Italian prog has generally been one strong in melody, perhaps coming from their rich operatic heritage. Although if you don’t know, much of the soundtrack portion of the disc is purely instrumental.

Normally I don’t do long reviews of live albums, but given the stature of this band and their place in prog history I thought it was worth taking a little more time. Clearly this will be a disc with many devoted fans. And I’m sure there will be some debate about Osanna’s decision to redo the music with an orchestra. To my ears, nothing is lost and much is gained. Some redefined classic symphonic prog. Well worth getting into.
