San Diego's Olivelawn were a SoCal punk rock band who released two full-length albums in the early 1990s before the members parted ways. The group's muscular sound was powered by singer Mike Olson's fierce delivery, the guitars of O (a.k.a. Otis Barthoulameu) and the rhythm section of drummer Eddie Glass and bassist Jonny Donhowe.

The short-lived unit released their debut, Sap, on Nemesis Records in 1991, following that with the Headhunter release Sophomore Jinx in 1992. The latter was produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden). The group's sound displayed a clear debt to such predecessors as The Stooges, Black Sabbath, and the MC5. Olivelawn included several important members of the LA music scene including Otis Bartholomeu, aka. O - a record producer, roadie for the Muffs, and a published skateboard photographer, who would later go on to form Fluf, as well as Eddie Glass, who later switched to lead guitar and joined the band Fu Manchu in 1993 and in 1996 founded the power trio Nebula.

    The band:

    Bass - Jonny Donhowe
    Drums - Eddie Glass
    Guitar - O*
    Vocals - Mike Olson

Album recorded by Jack Endino on Eight Track at Word of Mouth Studios, Seattle, WA.

Olivelawn did a fine job in carrying the torch for the SoCal punk underground at a time when attention was being diverted in droves towards the Seattle alt-rock scene. With the aid of legendary grunge producer Jack Endino, the man behind Nirvana's Bleach and Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff, Olivelawn's Sophomore Jinx! if nothing else proves the merit of ambitious eight-track recordings. Partial to Fender guitars and speedy tempos, Johnny Donhowe and O lead the charge on short rockers such as "Hate" and "Burner." Drummer Eddie Glass and singer Mike Olson amply surf the guitarists' waves of feedback on an extended psychedelic jam called "A Season in Hell." Meanwhile a cover version of ZZ Top's "Heard It on the X" helps bring the fun out of all of the band's blatant aggression. [AMG]

    Track List:

    12. A Season in Hell
    13. untitled [hidden track]

    Crunchy, catchy, and clever.

This album is a pure Fender assault, with catchy hooks and clever, slightly devious lyrics ("When I see your best friend, it feels like an earthquake" for example).

It's like plain old loud skatepunk music, only a click smarter and funnier. I've had this CD for many years and it still gives me a grin whenever I play it.
The second "Too Slow" on the track list is really an uncredited cover of the Circle Jerks' "Red Tape". It's hard to imagine but Olivelawn's cover is actually a bit faster.

If you like clever, loud, aggressive guitar rock, give this one a spin. If you like Olivelawn, you should check out Fluf. It's the phoenix that rose from the ashes of Olivelawn's demise, and they rock like hell, too. [Amazon user review]
