Nels Andrews gained plaudits far and wide for his debut album 'Sunday Shoes,' as parched as the American Southwest landscapes he inhabited. Three years on and his second album finds him in New York, employing a fuller, more produced sound but maintaining a restless, questing soul. He describes the intervening years as replacing one itinerant lifestyle (labouring in the canneries of Alaska and planting trees in the forests of South Dakota) with another (travelling musician or troubadour). In the hubbub of the city he has sought solace in solitary spaces, abandoned piers and rooftops.

Despite the emphasis placed on the move to the city in the publicity material there is little here to mark this as a New York record. The pace, delivery and lyrical content remain rooted in a folky context, vocally Andrews draws on the tradition of the south, particularly on the penultimate song, "Sunday Shoes". The band flesh out the sound and Andrews acknowledges the assistance of producer Todd Stickafoose here. A lush backdrop to the songs with the basic guitar (in the main acoustic), bass and drums embellished by keyboards including pump organ, ARP, mellotron and whispers of banjo, harp and pedal steel. In addition and reminiscent of Tom Waits' discovery of Harry Partch, there is a wine glass orchestra which adds exotic and unexpected surprises, whether in the glissando that is on the opening song "Fever Dream" or the almost Oriental interjections on "Butterfly Wing". Despite that there is none of the claustrophobic frenzy of Waits, rather this is an airy, bright and optimistic album. The songs are at times dreamlike, shuffling past, almost languid. Andrews' vocals are reminiscent of Jackson Browne on 'Late For The Sky' and some of the songs here reach that peak of creativity. It would be unfair to pick out highlights, from the start this album draws one in with welcoming arms. But one cannot fail to mention the excellent "Temple Incense", best song so far this year. From the opening song "Fever Dream" the album gets better and better until finally "Dollar And The Dream" ties up the show with lyrics that could be by Springsteen. Maybe some of the city has seeped in.
