    Contemporary Classical, Electronic | Innova 877 | 2013 | 59:28 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Full Scans | Various File Hosts | 288 MB
Alarm Will Sound, Todd Reynolds (violin), Alan Pierson (conductor), Neil Rolnick (laptop computer), San Francisco Conservatory New Music Ensemble, Maya Kherani (soprano), Carrie Zhang (alto), Daniel Cilli (baritone), Nicole Paiement (conductor)

Neil Rolnick's (b. 1947) latest work is a seamless marriage of musical styles, of organic melody and edgy live digital processing. The release includes two 30-minute pieces for big ensemble, soloist and computer. In exploring those two threads of modernism and melody Neil integrates the disparate elements seemingly effortlessly. The music is rhythmic and has a delightfully appealing exuberance. The first - and title - piece has a nice sense of drama and flair. The second track - Anosmia - has a playful nature and highlights the vocals. It's described as a monodrama for three singers, computer and ensemble... The piece draws on a variety of Western musical idioms - including doo-wop...

Rejecting European modernism in the head modernist’s own backyard. And imagining the world without a nose. These are the points of departure for Neil Rolnick’s new CD, Gardening At Gropius House. And though the topics sound serious, the music is joyful and uplifting, infused with grooves and sticky melodies, with exuberant and virtuosic writing all around.

...it all comes from the idea of performance and communication. I can play electronics as well as anyone. I can get on a stage and play things now using a computer or whatever, and feel like I can give as a good a performance as anyone can. And so it puts me in the place to communicate. One of the things that I learned when I was playing rock and roll and jazz was that it was great to be able to sit in with the band and have your role that you played. But at some point, if you really were trying to communicate your own ideas, you had to be able to get up and do it yourself without all the support.
