    Nikolai Medtner's alternately brooding and playful piano music suggests a combination of Scriabin's thick textures, Chopin's fleeting and scurrying melodies and the dynamism of Liszt. Though his music has been largely ignored in recent years, this collection of Medtner's complete piano works is a major event and will do much to bring this neglected composer back into the spotlight. Geoffrey Tozer has lived with these works for years and his dedication shows. It is difficult to imagine that this magnificent set will be surpassed any time soon.
