The last few years have seen Matt Schell of Team Shadetek strike out on his own with a ruck of wickedness for the Dutty Artz label and alongside DJ Rupture with the multifarious 'Solar Life Raft' mix. 'Flowers' is an entirely solo affair, matching dubstep-indebted bass riddims with synthlines and samples strangely attuned to some kind of Middle-Eastern/folk mode. Matt is a fully signed up anglophile, as evidnced by the rhythmic inspiration throughout the album, from the Bassline-debted drum patterns and sugary sharp melodies of 'Sweetnesz', to the sinewy, Wiley-esque 'Ihop' or the garage up-shuffle of 'Funny Cats' and the AntiSocial Ents-alike dubstep of 'Blackeyed Susans'. At first this musical element can seem jarring and oddly alien, but a few listens in and it settles into a blissfully odd confection warranting further investigation. Heavy.
