If this cover art makes you laugh, you’ll be glad to know it serves its purpose well: the music on this cd, especially the first concert for eight metal strings, is delightfully spirited and funny. Not many composers can do that, create “serious” music which is comical at the same time. I’ve always appreciated Prokofiev for that capacity. He could be groundbreakingly modern – with a jolly smile.
The first concerto, then, with its setting for mandoline and percussion, reminds of Naples, bluegrass and minimalism with a touch of the tongue-in-cheek roughness of Louis Andriessen. The sheer combination!
The second concerto features a harmonium, an instrument we have come to know Padding for in my last post of Dutch Airlines. Again, Padding takes this – perhaps not very elegant - instrument to great heights. Or better, performer Dirk luijmes does.
The third concerto is slightly more thoughtful in the beginning. Introspective, perhaps, with a melancholy undercurrent; but all this soon gives way again to Padding’s good-humoured musicianship in the last movement.
