    Maria Callas –1923-1977
    Life & Art

The programme celebrates her singing and dramatic skills, explores the woman behind the
public persona and reveals the conflict between her personal aims and her artistic ambitions.
Callas’s professional colleagues interviewed include conductor Carlo Maria Giulini, tenor
Giuseppe di Stefano and producer Franco Zeffirelli, and there are important contributions from
such people as Lord Harewood, Edith Gorlinsky, wife of Callas’s lifelong friend and agent, and
Giovanni Battista Meneghini, Callas’s ex-husband, as well as fascinating glimpses of her family,
musical associates and the dazzling social scene into which Aristotle Onassis introduced her.
Also included are extracts of Callas in performance, especially in the magnificent Tosca from
Covent Garden in 1964, and a number of concerts culminating in the last Japanese tour with Di
    Stefano in 1974.
The events of her life, both musical and personal, were always news, but Maria Callas died a
recluse in Paris in 1977 at the age of 53, a lonely and unhappy woman, almost as if echoing the
plaintive prayer of Tosca: ‘I have lived for love and music – why have you repaid me in this way?’.

    the 1962 Hamburg concert
By the beginning of 1962, Callas’s stage career had virtually stopped, and she performed in public
only at concerts until the 1964 Tosca at Covent Garden. Her main concert tour in 1962 began at
the Royal Festival Hall in London on 27 February and continued through March with
appearances in Munich, Hamburg, Essen and Bonn.
In the three years since the previous Hamburg concert Callas’s voice has become somewhat
smaller in size, but she is clearly in full command of it and does not disappoint her Hamburg
fans. The previous year in Paris she had recorded her first album of arias sung in French, a
language in which she never performed on the operatic stage, and she opens her concert with
three French items. The first, the dramatic ‘Pleurez, mes yeux’, is sung by Callas with intense
emotional feeling. After the two orchestral solos, Callas surprises and delights her audience with
an enticing glimpse of what her stage Carmen might have been.
Then Callas sings one of her early Verdi favourites, ‘Ernani, involami’, and follows it with
the bel canto showpiece finale from La Cenerentola. But the finest is left to last, when she gives a
blazing account of the great aria ‘O don fatale’ from Don Carlo, closing the concert with the
unique combination of musical sensibility and sheer driving power that only Callas at her best
    could deliver.
