    End of status report

This 17-track anthology inaugurates a series of planned archival releases. Going under the group name Makám for convenience, indeed it casts its instrumental net far wider than Makám. Makám is the ensemble with successions of personnel founded in 1984 and led by the multiinstrumentalist, composer and bandleader Zoltán Krulik. Six of the tracks are Makám recordings. Ten are from the band that immediately preceded Makám. This was called Makám és Kolinda, literally Makám and Kolinda, because they were two bands that played in one unit between 1980 and 1984. Historically speaking, the most arresting item is 'Elojáték' ('Prelude'). It is played by Krulik's first ever band Creatív Stúdió Öt ('Creative Studio Five') - which existed between 1975 and 1980. Elöjáték is the first CSÖ recording I've ever heard. It is a form of East-West chamber music with jazz guitar lines and chords and cor anglais. The ceverness is that it prefaces what it effect becomes an East-West suite with Makám és Kolinda's 'Tizenhárom' ('13') into 'Sirass' ('Cry To Me') from the 1985. The instrumentation gives a taste of the flavours but won't prepare you for the snake-charming oboe, wailing sarangi, Hungarian dance inflections, Makám és Kolinda's Indo-Hungarian 'Esoben' ('In The Rain') or jazz moodiness of Makám's 'Udére' (an evil spirit). The only downside is everything's in Hungarian, contender for the Developed World's most impenetrable tongue, so cut out this review. Orient-Occident is one of those 'Where were you all of my life?' releases. - by Ken Hunt, Jazzwise
