With his own experiences in dramatic performance, Hampson brings interpretations through which we can relish that diversity [of the songs] . . . Particularly impressive are the ways in which he handles vernacular dialect as a device for getting the rhyme scheme to work properly. He commands sonority that recognizes the folk roots of the text without either elevating or ridiculing those roots.
Record Review / Stephen Smoliar, The Examiner (San Francisco) / 24. December 2010
Hampson never sounded better. His approach is natural and straightforward, just what you need for these songs, which take you into a dream world . . . I found these performances extremely affecting.
Record Review / Mary Kunz Goldman, Buffalo News / 26. December 2010
. . . creating a wonderfully fresh imaginative take on the songs . . . it is a constantly absorbing recital.
Record Review / Hilary Finch, BBC Music Magazine (London) / 01. January 2011
. . . a fascinanting account of "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" . . . the ambition is fully achieved; Hampson revelling in vivid new insights and pointing to hitherto unforeseen paths within the music . . . [Magnificently supported by the Wiener Virtuosen,] Hampson embarks on an intimate journey during which he imbues the familiar Mahlerian landscapes with innovative hues and tones. With unmistakably Viennese flavor, a transcendent aura of otherworldly lyricism imprints the whole journey . . . His immaculate narrative flow, impeccable diction, and a gift for inking in subtle gradations of thought and feeling, are eloquently complemented by the Wiener Virtuosen in a beguiling chamber reduction that emphasizes each Mahlerian nuance to the maximum . . . A firm contender for my Record of the Year list, 2010. Or 2011? Why not both!
Record Review / Sebastian Spreng, Classical Review / 03. January 2011
. . . unquestionably, no performer has ever had a more comprehensive knowledge of the manuscript sources . . . Instrumentally speaking, the results are fabulous . . . a deeply considered issue.
Record Review / David Gutman, Gramophone (London) / 01. February 2011
Mahler's whole world is here, rendered in a fabulously piercing and tender performance . . . [Hampson is] on superb form, catching the music's emotional complication as well as its folk-like simplicity.
Record Review / Ivan Hewett, The Daily Telegraph (London) / 04. February 2011
. . . this new Wunderhorn set is one to treasure for years to come.
Record Review / Christopher Abbot, Fanfare (Tenafly, NJ) / 01. May 2011
. . . with the smaller-scaled instrumental accompaniment here, it is especially effective. The wind sonority, meant to be organ-like in the symphonic version, is colorful in a new way . . . this is a deeply felt performance and a successful reimagining of the possibilities in the song . . .[ "Urlicht"]: Hampson's pained intimacy makes this seem an entirely new song as well. . . . the line "Ach weine nicht, du Liebste mein" in "Wo die Schönen Trompeten blasen," it's gratifying . . . Hampson sounds in fresher voice than he did three years earlier recording some of the same songs in San Francisco . . . he sounds quite sweet in his top register in "Der Schildwache Nachtlied" . . . He's at his best when telling a story, as in "Lob des hohen Verstands."
Record Review / William R. Braun, Opera News (New York) / 01. June 2011
