Luz Casal has published her first studio album this week in 5 years. The previous 'Almas twins' (2013), in turn, had taken 6 years to arrive, always leaving aside a compilation (2011) and the album of versions of boleros of 2009. Besides being a long-awaited album for the aforementioned period , 'Corra el aire' presents the peculiarity of being produced by Ricky Falkner, known in the alternative world for having been part of Standstill, and to which Luz has come because he liked the Quique González album that he produced, 'Me mata if you need me'(2016).
Luckily, no one has tried to disguise Casal as an indie or alternative at this point, encountering results as different as Raphael's 'Infinite dances', as she says: "for alternative, I, regardless of what the acronym". What Falkner has done and musicians and artists as well known in the indiemainstream world as Depedro or Santos is to give an appropriate finish to these songs that speak to us with hope about life, and also about its opposite. And we do not talk about strings or pomposity. Especially piano, rhodes, hammond and accordion by Josep M. Baldomà (he seems to have the reins in 'Tanto ruido'), but also the country cadence of the guitars of the single 'Miénteme al oído' are building a calm, reflective, adult album and happy ever close to the last ones of La Buena Vida.
In 'Que corra el aire' we find songs about death, such as 'Lucas', dedicated to a boy who died of encephalitis, and 'Meu pai', dedicated by Luz to his father; but both avoid sounding tear gas, transmitting in truth the joy of living of someone who has faced cancer twice, both in 2007 and in 2010. 'Days borrowed', again with Luz sharing credits with Pablo Sycet, is quite a oda to life ("we are here on the way / on a journey towards a marked end (…) we will toast for you, for me / because your breath will help me to continue"); in the same way that resound in the head of the listener, such as "feed love, the only food" ("The only truth"), "a fall is better than living in a cloud of another life" (' Lie to my ear ') or "the vertigo will go away if you dare to jump" (' Start again '). Desire to live and new adventures that are evident from the first theme, the rocker and owner, 'Que corra el aire', with a great recreation of direct sound that shines especially in the CD edition and in high fidelity. Yes, there are still people who care about mastering, mixing, etc.
Without "highlights" the size of 'Between my memories', 'You are everything' or 'I will kiss the floor', the wonderful singles that did very rightly of 'Como la flor prometida' (1995) the most sold album of his life, 'Let the air run' does present a correct succession of good songs. A pleasant album, not extremely comfortable or self-indulgent, in which the bolero 'Quise olvidarte' (written by Cristina Plaza de Clovis), the final version of 'Amores' by Mari Trini or the outcome of 'Volver a empezar' stand out.
