Lakshminarayana Shankar - Eternal Light (2000)

When John Mclaughlin reformed the legendary band Shakti as "Remember Shakti", violinist L. Shankar was not able to participate. So here, at the turn of the millennium, he gathers Shakti members Zakir & Vikku together as a Classical Indian version of Remember Shakti. The album is quite fine and is dedicated to Zakir's father, Ustad Allarakha, an incredible tabla master and Ravi Shankar's frequent collaborator.




This album is at the formost top ranking of my meditation recommandations, along with the Gyuto Monks, the didju ridu CD called "The sounds of the aborigine:Music from the Australian bush", many other Hussain's production that can be found on his own label, Moment! Records, and finally but not least all tha Ravi Shankar and Subramaniam albums I have ever heard.
In short terms, this album is a meditation on light starting from the flame of a candle, to the inner light of your mind, to the Light. An ode to life, it is a sublime musical experience that will send you dancing with the lightness of the light of a candle in an empty space towards the most amazing experiences that human beinngs were meant to experience. No word could come close to experiencing it, so, enjoy!


Virtuosic brilliance smoothly melds with complimentary group interplay on Shankar's Eternal Light. A quarter of a century after their first collaboration in the East-West fusion ensemble Shakti, double violinist and vocalist Shankar, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, and ghatam (clay pot) master T.H. Vinayakram come together on this Moment Records release. Son of the famed V. Lakshminarayana Iyer, Shankar was a precocious child violinist and singer. A five-octave vocal range and unmatched command of the ten-string double violin allow Shankar to sway from piercing high notes to rumbling bass tones with grace. Zakir Hussain's deftly played tabla patterns and T.H. Vinayakram's authoritatively articulated ghatam lines match Shankar's own exemplary performance without jeopardizing the integral success of the CD.
