Jorge Bolet playes Liszt - Etudes d'Execution Transcendante

Franz Liszt's 'Etudes d'exйcution transcendante' are a document of the cult of instrumental virtuosity which flourished in the early 19th century. Spurred on by the legerdemain of Paganini and the technical and aesthetic groundbreaking of Chopin's etudes, Liszt endeavored to demonstrate the full-range possibilities in the modern piano. Toward that end he revised and improved the etudes several times over a period of two decades before they reached their definitive form in 1851. Cuban-born pianist Jorge Bolet was one of the great exponents of Romantic keyboard literature, reviving works by forgotten masters and specializing, above all, the music of Liszt. This recording, made in Barcelona in 1970, shows his familiar virtues, power with sparkle, elegance and spirit, and virtuosity displayed not as a matter of duty but of great joy.
