Linda Cionitti (clarinet), Vocal Ensemble & Chamber Soloists, Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Robert Dunham (conductor)

This is the most extraordinarily eclectic album of music I have heard in a long time. You might well expect a contemporary piece for clarinet and percussion to jar when it follows - literally - an extended Schumannesque lyrical duo from 1834. But there is in fact a common factor that makes this an absolutely fascinating and delightful recital disc. It is the uniformly high quality of the music which in turn is much aided by the superb playing of principal protagonist clarinettist Linda Cionitti.

I must show some restraint. I would prefer to spend this entire review discussing Scott McAllister’s Black Dog, the final track on the album. But, I’ll take a cue from clarinetist Linda Cionitti and make you wait until the end for the best part. ... The opening work on the album, Libby Larsen’s Yellow Jersey, is a duet for 2 clarinets. ... There could not have been a better choice to exemplify the repetitive push, push, push of bicycle pedals than the pulsing drone of the low clarinet. There is excitement, mixed with duty, dreams mixed with drudgery. It’s a theatrical piece and it’s meant to be. The other work from which the title is derived, James David’s E-type Jag, continues the theme of motion-inspired compositions. ...The piece has a rag-time feel mixed with smoky jazz, like something gritty and interesting is happening just beyond your view. Like the car, this piece is too cool for you and it knows it. ... And then, like a triple-crème de la crème, guilty as sin and almost as much fun, McAllister’s Black Dog steals the show. There are other works on the album, true, but McAllister’s piece proves Cionitti’s got skills. Utilizing some extended technique, McAllister calls on the clarinetist to play the same pitch using different fingerings. Many notes on the instrument are possible using several, sometimes upwards of 10 or 12 fingerings, all with a slightly different timbre, but I’ve never heard a composer utilize that before. Dancing around our 12 tempered pitches is in right now, as is inspiration from the great rockers, like this work claims to be, but McAllister reaches beyond what so many modern composers are still trying to figure out. He knows there’s no shame in aspiring to be Led Zepplin. And McAllister seems to find solace in the strange, deep-in-the-gut tension inherent in the same pitch played by the same instrument, with just slightly different overtones. Yes, there are four other works on the album, all well performed, but Black Dog is the black sheep who knows he’s different and prefers it that way.
