The great tenor saxophonist and flutist Lew Tabackin is joined by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Victor Lewis on this well-rounded program. The Concord CD has many highlights, including "Hot House," Duke Ellington's "Serenade to Sweden," Tabackin's "A Bit Byas'd," and "You Leave Me Breathless"; the leader's tenor in particular is in top form. Highly recommended to fans of straight-ahead jazz, this release gives one a strong sampling of Lew Tabackin's talents.
The Lew Tabackin Quartet - Desert Lady (1990) {Concord Jazz}
Somebody once said that you can tell a man by the company he keeps. If that's true, check out the company that Lew Tabackin is keeping on "Desert Lady:" The great bop pianist Hank Jones, (the word "elegant" was coined with Mr Jones' playing in mind), bassist Dave Holland, (there's nobody better), and drummer Victor Lewis, (one of the unsung heros of jazz). And then, of course, there is Mr Tabackin: An outstanding tenor saxman, (think Sonny Rollins and Ben Webster), and flutist who has played with everybody from Cab Calloway to Maynard Ferguson to Toshiko Akiyoshi, (who is also his wife), and has also recorded several dozen albums as a leader.
"Desert Lady" is a collection of mostly standards, including a couple by Duke Ellington, ("Pyramid" and "Serenade to Sweden"), and a pair by Billy Strayhorn, ("Chelsea Bridge" and "Johnny Come Lately"). I am particularly fond of Mr Tabackin's flute and he does wonderful pipe work on his original "Desert Lady" and the Kern/Harbach classic, "Yesterdays."
As usual with Concord Records recordings, the sonics are excellent: A little on the warm side with plenty of air and instrumental separation.
If you are unfamiliar with Mr Tabackin's music, "Desert Lady" is an excellent introduction. This is main stream jazz played by guys who are both technically accomplished and in love with the music. That's an unbeatable combination.
