I'm very fond of Miles' '70s "electric" period, especially the dark, deep live albums he recorded during this time (namely Dark Magus and Agharta). This disc, which gives MD the big-band treatment, offers many pleasures of its own, although, for my money, neither Cugny nor anyone else (save maybe Bill Laswell) has ever reached the same primal place that Miles did during this time. Excellent album! This album is something special. Great atmosphere, 60 minutes of pure enjoying.

A suite of Miles Davis compositions, compiled by the author of Electrique Miles Davis, 1968-1975, and there's a clue in the title, because all but fairly dedicated Milesians will be thrown by tracks headed "Red China Blues," "Right Off," "Fun," and "Lonely Fire." Not perhaps first-run compositions, and yet they come from one of the most creative and still largely misunderstood – or at least controversial – periods of Miles's career.
"It's About That Time" from In A Silent Way is effectively the climax, before a reprise of "Yesternow" itself, and here Cugny and soloist Benhamou bring together many of the elements that have gone to make up this fascinating project. The Orchestre National de Jazz is a skilled unit, and the arranger has them playing some challenging material. It begins with a theme from Jack Johnson, a transcription of an ensemble passage that casual listeners may not even have registered under Miles's foregrounded trumpet. Here, it becomes a keynote theme to a set of variations that call on unexpected elements of the originals, like the horns on "Red China Blues" (from Get Up With It), or the bass theme from "Right Off" (Jack Johnson and Agharta). It's fascinating stuff, crisply played, and some of the best evidence yet for a reappraisal of Miles as a composer. Not the least important thing about it is that it will send listeners straight back to a pile of Miles records – 1968 to 1975 – with fresh ears.
