Så er Lars Lillo-Stenbergs Prøysenplate omsider utgitt, etter diverse runder i pressa om hans antatt kontroversielle nytolkninger av Prøysens folkekjære sanger. Vi skal ikke ta stilling til selve saken, da denne for utenforstående virker som en symbolsk kamp rundt opphavsrettigheter og overdreven pietet for et etablert uttrykk. Elin Prøysen har vel i en dels øyne kommet uheldig ut av affæren, og det er en klok avgjørelse at hunden nå er begravet og plata kommet til butikkene. Vi kan uansett melde om en svært ukontroversiell plate, Stenberg Synger Prøysen står faktisk støtt i en tradisjon for Prøysen-resepsjon som har vært gjeldende fra 70-tallet og framover.
Lars Lillo-Stenberg har ganske enkelt laget en flott og verdig plate. Han overbetoner ingen spesielle sider ved Prøysens tekster og har plukket viser av både lett og tyngre litterær gehalt. Dette tverrsnittet viser at Stenberg ikke er låst i den "alvorlige skolen" innen Prøysentolkning, retningen som synes å ha et umettelig behov for å gjøre Prøysen mørk og politisk. Denne båssettingen snevrer inn forståelsen av Prøysens rike dikterverk og er reduksjonistisk i sin konsekvens. Jørn Simen Øverli er eksponent for denne retningen, en Kolloen/bygdedyr-forståelse av Prøysen som ble stadfestet i den problemfikserte TV-dokumentaren sendt på NRK jula 2004.
Prøysen er en varm, frodig og kongenial dikter, ingen pamflettskrivende trubadur-rebell med en gitar som skyter fascister. At Lillo-Stenberg tar med Lomnæsvisa og andre dystre tekster virker orientert utfra disse visenens framragende litterære kvaliteter, ikke utfra hvordan Prøysen formidler "fortvilelse" eller "klassesamfunnet". Det er rett og slett befriende at Stenberg rister støvet fra viseklubbaftenes urtete-korrekte politiske overbygning av visene og gir oss kraftfulle tolkninger av noen av de mest vibrant poetiske frambringelser norsk visekunst kjenner.
Skulle vi lansere en utfordring til Prøysentolkerne, måtte det bli å vende på skillingen og forsøke noen "dristige" nytolkninger av Prøysens udiskutabelt "lette" repertoar, en mørk utgave av Blåbærvisa, en angstladen Bolla Pinnsvin. Spøk til side, dette er en del av en debatt som burde tas. Skal Prøysens diktning leve videre annet enn som musealiteter og skolepensum, fordrer dette en kontinuerlig brytning mot tidens tanke og tolkning. Dette gjelder all kunst, og episoden rundt Lars Lillos nytolkninger er bare en illustrasjon på hvor vanskelig en slik prosess kan (og må?) være.
Det er mye fin musikk på plata, arrangementene er de flotteste jeg kan huske å ha hørt på noen plate av en Prøysentolker. Stenbergs stemme er som skapt for melankolske stemninger, noe han viser oss allerede i åpningssporet, en mollstemt versjon av Lille Måltrost. Lillebrors Vise og Blåklokkevikua er perfekt satt i en musikalsk ramme av velfriserte harmonier og med en stemmekraft som bærer mye lengre enn mye gammal deLillos egentlig vitner om.
Selv om Eventyr føles litt spinkel er Møte suveren. Denne versjonen har et helt eget sug i seg som elegant kontrasteres av et Tom Waits-lignende arrangement. Den mektige Slipesteinsvalsen er nærmest a capella med gitar og piano i en framføring som helt presis treffer smertepunktene i teksten. Glimrende!
Jeg har mer problemer med Lomnæsvisa. Falsettkoret og spinetten i lydbildet blir til distraksjon mer enn til underbyggelse for en av Prøysens tyngste og mest metaforrike tekster. Robert Normanns melodi er dempet og sober, men klikker ikke med Lillo-Stenbergs foredrag. Intensjonen har dog garantert vært den aller beste.
På Visa Om Løgna er arrangementet mer revy-aktig og minner oss om Prøysens aktiviteter som revyskribent og dramatiker, særlig i kringkastingen. Slipesteinsvalsen får mot slutten en pendant i framføringen av en like naken og intens Det er Vondt, før plata avrundes med en flott Bolla Pinnsvin og evige Julekveldsvisa, den helt store moderne klassiker innen julesanglitteraturen.
Er det forresten en direkte "hommage à Prøysen" vi hører på spor 6, hvor Lars Lillo-Stenbergs stemme er forvrengt gjennom vocaliser (eller noe sånt) på refrenget til I Bakvendtland? Det høres grangivelig ut som Prøysen sjøl, i et gammelt radioopptak eller på en passe slitt 78-plate. Det er nesten som om n'Alf sjøl atter engang kommer ut av membranet på bestemors gamle Kurér.
Til alle Prøysenvenner vil jeg si at undertegnede aldri har hørt finere Prøysentolkninger på plate enn det Lars Lillo-Stenberg presterer her. En fornyelse av Prøysentradisjonen og en velkommen vitamininnsprøytning i Lars Lillos karriere. Mine varmeste anbefalinger.

Although Adventure feels a bit flimsy Meeting is superb. This version has a completely separate suction as elegantly contrasted by a Tom Waits-like arrangement. The mighty Grinding stone roller is almost a capella with guitar and piano in a performance that precise hit pain points in the text. Brilliant!
I have more problems with Lomnæsvisa. Falsetto choir and Spinetta in the sound becomes more distraction than substantiation for one of Prøysens heaviest and most metaphor-rich lyrics. Robert Normann tune is subdued and sober, but then not Lillo-Stone's lecture. The intention is however definitely been the best.
The Visa About Lying is event more cabaret-like and reminds us Prøysens activities revue writer and dramatist, particularly in the broadcast. Grinding stone roller is at the end a counterpart in performing an equally naked and intense it hurts, before the album ends with a great Bolla Porcupines and eternal Christmas Eve Visa, the ultimate modern classic Christmas song in the literature.
Is there a direct way "hommage à Prussia" we listen to track 6, where Lars Lillo-Stone's voice is distorted through vocaliser (or something like that) on the chorus to I Bakvendt Land? It sounds like grangivelig Prussia himself, in an old radio recording, or a fit 78 worn disc. It's almost as if n'Alf himself, once again coming out of the membrane at grandma's old Couriers.
To all Prøysen Friends I would say that the author has never heard finer Prussia Interpretations on the plate than Lars Lillo-Stenberg perform here. A renewal of Prussia tradition and a welcome boost to Lars Lillo's career. My warmest recommendations. groove.no
