After leaving the World Saxophone Quartet, the innovative altoist/composer Julius Hemphill recorded with an unaccompanied sax sextet. This CD features such great players as Marty Ehrlich, Carl Grubbs, the young James Carter, Andrew White, and baritonist Sam Furnace along with the leader on 14 of Hemphill's compositions. These miniatures (all under seven minutes) are most notable for their fresh melodies, logical arrangements, and spirited ensembles.

"The Hard Blues," the last and longest track on Hemphill's first post-WSQ recording, is an old tune which seems finally to have found its appropriate setting. These rhythmless sextets are an obvious extension of his work with the WSQ, but they put still greater emphasis on Hemphill's considerable compositional and arranging skills and his highly distinctive variation on conventional theme-and-solo jazz; often the group will improvise round a theme stated quite simply and directly by the "soloist," This has quite a profound impact on the overal sound, which does tend to become rather heavy round the middle. Hemphill tends to avoid extremes of pitch, scoring blocks of sound in which rather small variations of register and timbre take on considerable significance. That's particularly noticeable on the sinuous "Tendrils," which features the two flautists in one of the more linear themes. The piece actually seems to unravel, in contrast to the melting, blurry quality of most of the other tracks. Unwise to review an album by recourse to its sleeve, but the deceptively liquescent lines of ceramic artist Jeff Schlanger's blue stoneware saxophone suggest something of Hemphill's hard centre. Fat Man And The Hard Blues is both an intelligen continuation of the last decade's work and a challenging new departure. Future projects should be watched with interest.
