John Williams has always liked to experiment musically, and on this fascinating CD the classical guitarist takes great delight in mixing pop, jazz, classical and rock influences into a mesmerising, melodic whole. Enjoy.

When only six, John Williams was encouraged by his jazz-guitarist father, Len, to take up the classical guitar; the youngster progressed so rapidly that he eventually became a pupil of the renowned Segovia. Great success followed as John wowed the classical concert circuit, both solo and occasionally in tandem with the masterly Julian Bream. Since then, John has even found himself in the best sellers' charts, most often with the progressive rock group Sky, but more unusually with straightforward recordings of classical guitar concertos.

The sessions on this album date from a creative period in the Seventies when Williams began to look beyond the constrictions of solo classical playing, surrounding himself with players from quite different musical backgrounds and no doubt bringing some of his father's jazz influences to this new, broader and altogether more approachable brand of instrumental music. The wide range of material presented here shows Williams at his diverse best, from pop songs such as Joni Mitchell's haunting 'Woodstock', through 'Sans Souci' - written and produced by 'fifth Beatle' George Martin - and the lush 'Cavatina' (better known as Johns Top 20 theme from The Deer Hunter), to disco arrangements of well known Bach tunes, rearranged folk melodies like 'New Sun Rising', or the eastern inflections of 'Raga Vilasakhani Tadi'.

As Williams told Guitar Player magazine in 1980: "The guitar has a far greater adaptability to the music that's happening everywhere around you than any other instrument". Listen to this CD and you'll agree.
