North South Divide is a collection of songs produced in an exceptionally sparse manner, with McCullagh’s vocals, guitar and harmonica only joined by a violin on a couple of tracks. Whilst most people of 15 years old would often hide behind a wall of noise and confusion, this delicate approach to song writing gives McCullagh a great platform to tell his stories. Comparisons with Bob Dylan abound, most notably when the harmonica comes out, and none more so than in the track ‘White Rose’, where gentle open chord fingerpicking sits alongside a beautiful ballad and the Dylanesque blowing.
Opener ’55 Blues’ is a driving bluesy juggernaut of a track, which is laudable given that it is performed solely on acoustic guitar and harmonica. The tempo runs at a frantic pace throughout giving the track a feel of definite purpose and direction, whilst echoes of ‘Hats off to Harper’ by Led Zeppelin are felt throughout this song’s guitar parts.
‘North South Divide’, the title track and debut single from McCullagh addresses the issues felt by many who see the disparity between the capital and the rest of the country. If anything, the singer’s northern accent seems far more pronounced during this track, serving to underline where he falls in relation to this divide.
Aided by atmospheric violin, ‘Long Long Way’ contains McCullagh’s most assured and striking vocal performance of the album. It would be nice to hear how his songs would sound with a fuller instrumentation, and this song is a little taste of this, with next track ‘The Ballad of a Blue Poet’ doing similar by offering touches of gypsy jazz in the violin.
Eight minute epic ‘The Strand’ closes the album, coming in like an old Irish ballad, certainly betraying some Celtic roots. The rambling lyrics give the track a feel of whimsy, and show a depth of thought not often seen in songwriters so young.
Given that many people who write songs at the age of 15 usually churn out the same old clichés, it is refreshing to hear a young songwriter running in the opposite direction to most of his peers. That McCullagh manages to do this with aplomb is a tribute to his superior talent.
