Translucence/Drift Music is a double studio album by American ambient musician Harold Budd and English musician and graphic artist John Foxx, which was released in August 2003. Budd and Foxx had long been engaged by the other's work, eventually working together in 1996. These two discs are a record of those sessions.
There are few other styles of music that can escape the vagaries of fashion or chic as the ambient genre. Anyone who has affection for a particular ambient album will be aware of the deep imprint it can leave on your emotional subconscious; you can play a certain track and remember where you were and what you felt 10 years after it originally moved you. Ambient music also works on a secondary level, the more immediate, whereby you can purge yourself of emotional restlessness in the here and now. Two artists that have certainly left an indelible imprint on my mind in this respect are Harold Budd and John Foxx. The combination of these two artists is therefore something to be relished. It’s a rare occasion when you actually know an album will be good before you’ve even heard it, and this double-CD, unsurprisingly, does not disappoint.
Disc One, Translucence, is more strongly associated with Harold Budd’s piano compositions, as the duo carve out a collection of tracks that all have their own unique blueprint. All the tracks consist of solitary piano notes, often set to chasms of reverb and echo. You might imagine this to be repetitive, but Budd in particular is a genius when it comes to expressing different moods and atmosphere’s with the instrument. Most tracks are deeply moving; other’s mysteriously detached, but all make a connection in their own way. ‘Here And Now’ is simply stunning in its aching loneliness, and is sure to bring a tear to the eye of the vulnerable. Meanwhile, the cavernous piano strikes of ‘Implicit’ are devastating in their simplicity. There is hardly a single track on ‘Translucence’ that I would skip if I was playing the album, the undulating highs and lows of the compositions are even more effective when strung together.
The second CD, ‘Drift Music’ is far more in keeping with its title. The piano content is toned down to make way for overlapping layers of synthesised sound, washing and bathing the compositions with extraordinary elegance. ‘Drift Music’ unfolds to become almost a concept album; perhaps like one of those mood tapes you would buy to help you relax. It’s not as immediate as ‘Translucence’, but needs to be afforded more time and space to get the best out of it. I could go on all day about the subtle delicacies of individual tracks on both albums, but I would merely state that there are so few artists making legitimate ambient music like this these days, that ‘Translucence + Drift Music’ currently rests of an entirely singular plateau. However, it also sits next to history’s best ambient works with effortless ease.
