Scandal marks the first time that trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Joe Lovano have recorded a full studio album of material together, revealing a passionately adventurous band for whom no territory is off-limits. As on their live debut recording, Sound Prints features pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Joey Baron. The super group heads off into swinging, heartfelt and sophisticated new territory inspired by saxophonist giant Wayne Shorter. Two of Shorter's pieces receive special treatment. A truly fantastic and original group playing new originals and music by Shorter.

Five MARVELOUS Stars. This is a momentous second meeting between two of today’s jazz titans caught in the studio at the top of their game in their collaborative quintet “Sound Prints”: composer, arranger, tenor sax giant Joe Lovano, who also plays G mezzo soprano sax here; and composer, arranger, trumpet icon Dave Douglas, both of whom have been ranked #1 on their respective instruments in various DownBeat International Critics polls at different times. Here, on Douglas’ Greenleaf Music records, this awesome front line is superbly aided and abetted by a talented ‘leaders in their own right’ rhythm section of Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda May Han Oh on double bass, and Joey Baron on drums. They play several compositions by Douglas and Lovano, plus two well-known songs by Wayne Shorter. Empathy and invention is running hot among all of the players from beginning to end, especially the impressive trumpet, tenor sax section work by the front line. Their previous Sound Prints recording was live at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

The ‘best of the best’ begins with the infectious “Dream State” with Douglas and Lovano playing and improvising simultaneously throughout most of the song giving way to Fields’ excellent solo. Douglas and Lovano jump right in to the straight ahead swinger “Full Sun” at full tilt, followed by a blistering, hip May Han pizzicato bass solo and compelling solos by Loving and Douglas. The bluesy “Fee FI Fo Fum” has more simultaneous swinging front line interaction before and after the theme statement, then Lovano unleases an evocative improvisation balancing lyricism and fiery runs, as does Douglas; Fields’ solo is outstanding. “Ups and Downs” is a lovely ballad with a sensitive theme statement from Douglas and touching solos from Lovano and Douglas, plus a superb Fields’ solo. “The Corner Tavern” conjures up a fun, rollicking bar based on some exultant solos especially the ‘trading’ between Douglas and Lovano and the jubilant solos of May Han and Fields. The group also creates a memorable, distinctive version of Wayne Shorter’s “Juju”. And there is much more wonderful music in this album. The title track, “Scandal” is a tender, touching song with several reflective sections, featuring muted Douglas. “Sound Prints” is an outstanding group that creates marvelous music on “Scandal” which reveals more and more jewels during each subsequent listening session.
