A direct descendent of Chano Pozo (the illustrious Cuban master drummer who paved the way for many others in New York City, back in the late 1940s), Joaquín Pozo Calderón continues the family tradition, as he delivers his latest percussive work in the context of what is being called "The New Afro-Cuban Rumba Sound." In 2000, Pozo won first place in the prestigious "Festival del Tambor" (Festival of the Drum) in Cuba, rapidly gaining national and international recognition for his percussive talents. This recording showcases the dexterity, speed and magical hands of this gifted drummer, who excels in the traditional drum language of Cuban rumba. The five members of this rumba ensemble (Rumba de Cayo Hueso) are led by Joaquín Pozo (conga, quinto and güiro), with the backing of Lázaro Quesada (clave and güiro), Antonio Martínez(tumbadoras and batá), Mario Martínez (tres golpes), and Jesús Gilberto Zayas "El Corto" (lead vocals).
